Breaking Gravity – Gymnastics and Bullet Time

I’m very proud of my oldest son Alex, who was a gymnast in high school and State Champion on the still rings for several years.   Those years provided a crash course in technique and scoring which lead to my love of the sport, which still remains to this day. Breaking Gravity was produced by Marc Donahue, who also has a great video about his array of cameras.  (Note: There are several really great sequences here, specifically the fire around 1:30, his excellent mouthing of words while the array is firing and the desk shot at the end) This video combines gymnastics, cinematography and multiple video …

An Actual “Sweded” Sportscast. No, really.

If you’ve never seen “Be Kind Rewind,” the oddly charming yet starkly barren comedy from 2008, go see it (or check the meme) and you’ll know what this post refers to.  It’s really an entertaining film and you will probably not be sorry you spent a paltry 100 minutes you dedicated to it. Now that we’ve got THAT out of the way check out the awesome Sweded version of NCAA highlights.  The station didn’t have the rights to the actual highlights, so they gave us the next best thing.  Believe it or not, the commentary was helpful! Check it: Cheers!

Why Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. is Firefly 2.0

Before I start it should be made clear…I am a mega fan of the Joss Whedon series Firefly, and subsequent movie, Serenity.  But it doesn’t take a mega fan to see the similarities between Firefly and the most recent Joss Whedon television production, Marvel’s Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D. If we break down the characters and their roles we might just find we’re watching Firefly 2.0. The obvious similarities start with a mobile group, working on the fringes of the law using a cool ship as their base.  Sound familiar? The “Bus” is Serenity.  Much like our beloved Firefly, the S.H.I.E.L.D. crew needs …

Wonder Woman in Man of Steel 2: Batman VS. Superman?

While this clip ISN’T from an upcoming movie (that I know of), it’s proof that you can produce a believable Wonder Woman character on the big screen. There have been quite a few attempts at creating a decent Wonder Woman, whether for big screen or small, that have failed miserably.  Why have so many professionals stumbled when it comes to our beloved Diana Prince?  She’s one of the oldest and most revered characters in comic-dom, but no one can seem to get it right. Bleeding cool uncovered a casting call for a character that sounds like she could only be …

School of Rock Reunion

I thought “School of Rock” was a pretty decent movie if you go into it understanding what you were going to get. While perusing the Intergoogz I came across this video, which I thought was pretty cool considering the movie has been out for over a decade now. Check it… Some folks can’t stand Jack Black, but I’ve always been a fan of his. Also a huge fan of Tenacious D, the band he fronts with the awesomely plain Kyle Gass. Jack has had some really hits and some real bombs, but this movie is cute, funny, and full of …

Cool + 20 Years = Nostalgia or Parody?

Most of the time nostalgia always equals something cool. My personal space is filled with things that I’ve collected that remind me of my past.  Sometimes it’s hard to let some things go, such as the super special limited edition “Highlander – Directors Personal Cut”  VHS tape I got at a Star Trek convention in 1990. While perusing the far reaches of my external hard drives I came across “Reality Bites,” which when I originally saw it, was a pretty cool movie.  I was 23 when in 1994 and could personally relate to some of the themes of the movie …

Genius 8 Minute Sci-Fi Short – ABE

Rob McLellan writes and directs this compelling short focusing on a robot programmed to love and what happens when that love isn’t returned.  It’s chilling, thought provoking and refreshing and totally worth the 8 minutes. I love the psychotic C3P0/Kathy Bates from “Misery” mash up vibe. ABE from Rob McLellan on Vimeo. Apparently this is going to become a feature film,  and could join the ranks of “Moon,” “Sunshine,” and “Twelve Monkeys” in the straight Sci-Fi category.  I’m also digging the actor’s voice who actually mo-capped his performance…very GLaDOS-y.  On a side note, if you watch the VFX breakdown I …
